Curriculum
The curriculum is the total of all learning experiences provided by the school for our children. We aim to provide a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum which is rich in practical experiences and through which all children can develop their skills, talents and interests and achieve according to their potential. It reflects the full range of academic knowledge, skills and understanding and includes a strong emphasis on spiritual, moral and cultural development.
We attach great importance to the teaching of the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. These skills are common to every part of our curriculum and are included in such subject areas as Science, Technology, Geography, History, Music, Art and Design and RE. Our aim is that every child will grow up to become a responsible, caring and useful member of tomorrow's society. They will also understand what skills they need to acquire to become a life long learner.
Our curriculum planning is detailed and creates firm progression through adherence to National Curriculum attainment targets. Planning is available in classes.
Religious Education
The school uses “Here I Am;” a curriculum used by many Catholic and Church of England schools and the Liverpool Anglican Diocesan syllabus. With the support of diocesan advice we work to maintain a balance which reflects the teachings of both churches. Children also learn about other faiths.
Sports
In order to give our children the best opportunities possible we employ Bee Active. This allows us to provide high quality PE and a range of after school and lunch time sports. Additionally, there are weekly swimming lessons for our Year 4 children.
Music
The school employs peripatetic music teachers and all children in Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument at no cost to their family. Instruments taught include: percussion, cello and violin. The choir take part in a variety of events in the community throughout the year. Year 5 take part in Wider Opportunities project which culminates in a concert with the Halle Orchestra in the Bridgewater Hall.
ICT
The school is well equipped with desk top and laptop computers as well as interactive whiteboards in all classes. The school also has a learning platform which you can visit at www.christtheking.cheshire.sch.uk
Modern Foreign Language
In order to prepare our children for modern foreign language learning at Secondary School level, we work in partnership with All Hallows Catholic College for modern foreign language learning. All KS2 children (Years 3-6) receive weekly Spanish lessons, taught by a specialist Spanish teacher from All Hallows.
SEN
We have a specialist Special Educational Needs Coordinator who works part time in school. Staff are well trained and deliver the same good standard of education to all children ensuring that each individual has his or her needs met.
Pastoral Care
All staff are trained in safeguarding and are ready to listen to and help children whatever their difficulties might be.
The school employs a Learning Mentor who supports children who may have difficulties which create a barrier to their learning or self esteem.
We also have access, through the our membership of the All Hallows Learning Community, to a family support worker who works independently and confidentially with families in need of support for whatever reason.
There is a wide variety of after school study, arts and sports activities available each afternoon. Our breakfast club opens at 7.30am each morning.
We firmly believe that the best way for children to learn and understand this body of knowledge is through a broad, balanced curriculum, rich in practical experiences. Our school provides children with a range of teaching styles and learning opportunities. There are times when children will be taught formally, but equally they will be encouraged to work in groups, co-operatively on a variety of practical tasks and problem solving opportunities. We want our children to have success in whatever they do. As we endeavour to treat each child as an individual, we hope to ensure that their full potential will be realized.
The setting of homework is seen as a preparation activity, particularly for our Year Six children as they move towards their first year at secondary school. Other years receive 'homework' in the form of study skills, spelling, mathematics, project work, science, English reading and sharing books and learning
We believe that learning is a life long, continuous process. It enables both the individual and societies to grow and develop. People of all ages learn most effectively when they feel valued and when they feel encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning.
We look forward to welcoming you for a visit to our school.
